Google ads Replaces DSA with AI Max 2026

Google ads Replaces DSA with AI Max 2026

Google has officially retired Dynamic Search Ads (DSA). Starting September 2026, every remaining DSA campaign will be automatically force-migrated to AI Max — with no opt-out and no way to create new DSA campaigns afterward.

On April 15, 2026, Google moved AI Max for Search out of beta into general availability and announced that all eligible DSA campaigns will be upgraded by the end of September. This is a firm deadline.

Why Google Is Killing DSA Now

For years, Dynamic Search Ads served as an effective long-tail safety net. Google would crawl your website and dynamically generate ads based on page content. However, search behavior has changed significantly.

Queries are now longer, more conversational, and complex. Around 37% of users begin their searches with AI tools instead of traditional Google Search. AI Overviews are also reducing click-through rates — Position 1 CTR drops from roughly 27% to 11% when an AI Overview appears.

DSA’s old architecture simply can’t keep up with real-time user intent. This is why Google is replacing it with AI Max.

What AI Max Does Differently

AI Max is not just a new name for DSA — it is a completely different system with three powerful capabilities:

  • Smart Search Term Matching — Uses real-time intent signals, session context, and behavioral data instead of just website content.
  • Dynamic Text Customization — The AI generates and customizes headlines and descriptions in real time for each individual query.
  • Final URL Expansion — AI can send users to any relevant page on your entire website (this is the most impactful but also the riskiest feature).

Together, these features shift from manual management to an AI-driven optimization layer.

Performance Numbers — The Real Picture

Google reports that AI Max campaigns using all features deliver an average of +7% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA/ROAS. Broader results show +14% average conversion lift, with up to +27% improvement for campaigns that previously relied on exact and phrase match keywords.

Real-world case studies include BYD achieving 24% more leads at 26% lower cost per lead, and an Australian utility seeing 16% more leads at 13% lower CPA.

Independent data gives a more balanced view: a median +13% revenue increase, but with +16% higher CPA. ROAS results vary widely, and up to 63% of “new” traffic can come from queries already covered by existing keywords. Success depends heavily on proper setup.

Migration Timeline

Google has split the transition into two phases:

  • Phase 1 (Now – August 2026): Voluntary migration window. You control the settings and configuration.
  • Phase 2 (September 2026): Forced automatic upgrades begin for all remaining campaigns. No opt-out, and new DSA creation is permanently disabled.

Why You Should Migrate Before September

The biggest risks of waiting are learning periods, loss of control, and disrupted reporting. AI Max needs time to learn your account’s performance patterns. Migrating now gives you several months of data before the deadline.

Forced migrations often flatten strategic nuances such as negative keywords, segmentation, and URL controls. Early migration lets you configure everything properly and export important baseline data first.

What Happens to the Keywords Selected?

AI Max does not rely on traditional keywords the same way DSA or standard Search campaigns do. Instead of using your selected keywords for matching, it uses AI-powered search term matching based on real-time user intent.

  • Existing keyword campaigns in your account will continue to run separately.
  • AI Max can find new queries but may also overlap with (and potentially cannibalize) traffic from your current keyword campaigns.
  • Negative keywords generally carry over, but you should review them after migration as some broad matching behavior can change.

This is why running parallel test campaigns is highly recommended — to see the actual overlap and incremental lift.

Pre-September Migration Playbook

Here’s the recommended step-by-step approach:

  • Audit all DSA campaigns, automatically created assets, and campaign-level broad match setups.
  • Export your baseline data (query reports, conversions, CPA/ROAS, asset performance) while you still can.
  • Set up parallel AI Max test campaigns and run them alongside your DSA campaigns for 4–6 weeks to measure real incremental results.
  • Configure Final URL Expansion conservatively at the start — begin with restricted pages and expand gradually.
  • Set Text Guidelines (up to 25 term exclusions and 40 messaging restrictions) before migration.
  • Use Brand inclusions/exclusions to protect your brand.
  • Disable Search Partners unless they perform well for your account.
  • Review query reports weekly during the first month after migration.

Additional Controls You Have

AI Max is not a complete black box. You can still control:

  • Text and messaging guidelines
  • Brand protections
  • Final URL Expansion (can be toggled off)
  • Search Partner Network
  • Detailed query-level reporting

There’s also a newer AI Brief feature for structured guidance on messaging, matching, and audience targeting.

Bye Bye to Dynamic Search Ads

Dynamic Search Ads are ending — the only question is whether you control the transition or let Google decide for you.

With roughly 5.5 months left, the smartest move is to start this week. Run parallel tests, configure settings carefully (especially Final URL Expansion), and gather solid performance data before September.

Advertisers who migrate early and thoughtfully will be in the strongest position. Those who wait risk higher costs, learning instability during peak periods, and suboptimal default settings.

Act now while you still have full control.
