Sora, OpenAI’s new video generation app, has the mobile world buzzing with excitement, and for good reason. It reached 1 million downloads in five days, beating ChatGPT’s first week performance. It is no wonder Sora is in such high demand. Built on the new Sora 2 model, the app is exclusive for iOS users, and allows users to create hyper-realistic videos and even deepfakes. Even with invite-only access, customers want the app. App intelligence firm, Appfigures, shows between September 30 and October 6, 2023, Sora had 627,000 iOS downloads, surpassing ChatGPT’s 606,000 downloads during its first week in 2022.
Sora quickly rose to prominence. On the very first day it was launched, September 30, 2025, the app reached 56,000 downloads and was ranked 3rd on the U.S. App Store. Just 3 days later, it achieved the top position on the charts, outperforming the new AI apps Claude by Anthropic and Microsoft Copilot, and competing with xAI’s Grok. According to Appfigures, October 1 was the day Sora’s downloads reached a peak of 107,800. Steady downloads during the first week of October was between 84,400 and 98,500. Bill Peebles, Sora’s OpenAI lead, noted that the app was downloaded a million times within the first few days, faster than ChatGPT, even with the limitation to the U.S. and Canada (around 45,000 installs were from Canada). Sora has increased hype with an invite-only model compared to the public release of ChatGPT. Exclusivity has not slowed its viral spread. Social media is flooded with Sora-generated videos and animations. With Sora available only on iOS devices and in two countries, it has reached impressive statistics almost—96% of ChatGPT’s U.S. only launch numbers according to Appfigures.
Sora’s AI that generates realistic deep-fakes rapidly climbs the fascination and controversy charts on social media. While user-generated clip experiments are common a few have pushed ethical boundaries. Interesting is the case of Zelda Williams, daughter to the late Robin Williams, who has been sent numerous AI generated images of her father and has requested people stop.
Sora’s strong daily download numbers suggest it will remain a cultural and technological phenomenon. With no Android version yet announced and invite waitlists increasing, the early success of the app suggests a transformative moment for mobile AI. Open AI has the challenge of scaling access to the app while also addressing the ethical dilemmas. Next, Sora needs to focus on redefining video creation or else the controversy will not allow it to reach its full potential.
