AI-Driven Solution Streamlines River Restoration for Rebalance Earth
Project overview
Rebalance Earth aims to invest £10 billion in natural infrastructure over the next decade, with river restoration as a key focus. Their manual site assessment process limits scalability and delays progress. Deeper Insights proposed the integration of AI-driven tools to their platform, like computer vision methods and neural networks to automate and streamline this process. This would enable faster, data-driven decisions, boosting Rebalance Earth’s capacity for ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.
The challenge
Rebalance Earth, a UK-based asset manager, aims to mobilise £10 billion over the next decade to invest in natural infrastructure projects. A key focus is river restoration, positioned within their "Nature as a Service" (NaaS) strategy. However, the current process for identifying and assessing potential restoration sites is time-consuming, taking up to two weeks per site and relying heavily on manual expertise. This limits scalability and delays progress toward their long-term goals. The integration of large geospatial and hydrological data sets also presents technical challenges, while uncertainties around climate models further complicate decision-making.
The solution
Deeper Insights proposed developing an AI-driven module to integrate in their Geo-Spatial Predictive Analytics Platform (GPAP). This module is expected to help automate much of the river restoration site assessment process, significantly reducing time and increasing scalability. By using AI tools, including computer vision, clustering algorithms, and neural networks, to rank potential sites based on key environmental metrics and streamline data integration, the GPAP module will offer efficient, data-driven evaluations. It will also include tools for estimating restoration costs, offering a more consistent and reliable framework for planning and investment.
The end result
Deeper Insights presented the AI-driven GPAP module as a solution to help Rebalance Earth speed up its river restoration work and expand its operational capabilities. This approach would enable the organisation to manage more projects concurrently, improving its capacity to restore natural ecosystems. It also provides a strong business case for investors, showing that nature restoration can be both essential and financially viable. The platform has the potential to enhance Rebalance Earth’s broader mission to enhance climate resilience and ecosystem restoration across the UK.
