You Can Now Transfer Chat History from Other AI to Gemini

Google just made it a lot easier to switch AI chatbots. As of March 26, 2026, you can now move your chat history, memories, preferences, and other contextual information from other AI platforms to Gemini. Gemini can pick up right where you left off with ChatGPT, Claude, or any other service. You don’t have to start over.

You can now use the “Import AI chats” feature (also called “Import Memory” and “Import Chat History”) on Gemini for personal Google Accounts. It was made to get rid of one of the most annoying things about trying out a new AI: losing all of your old conversations and the context you worked so hard to build.

Here is everything you need to know about Gemini, including step-by-step instructions, what works, what doesn’t, and important limitations. You may be tired of giving the same instructions over and over, want to keep working on a long-running project, or just like Gemini’s features better.

Why Google Launched Chat History Transfer to Gemini

Google’s official announcement emphasizes simplicity:

"Moving to Gemini just got incredibly simple. Bring your memories, preferences and chat history from other AI apps to Gemini, so you can pick up right where you left off without starting over."

Google has also quietly rebranded “Past chats” inside Gemini as Memory to better reflect the deeper, persistent context the app now maintains.

Two Easy Ways to Import Your AI Data into Gemini

Gemini offers two complementary import options:

  1. Import Memory (preferences, style, remembered facts, and context)
  2. Import Full Chat History (your entire conversation threads via ZIP file)

Both are accessed directly from the Gemini web interface.

Step-by-Step: How to Import Memories & Preferences to Gemini

Gemini can quickly “know” you better by looking at your writing style, preferences, habits, and important information you’ve shared with other AIs.

  1. Visit Gemini and log in with your own Google Account.
  2. Click Settings & Help at the bottom left, then Import Memory to Gemini.
  3. Copy the prompt that Gemini suggests.
  4. Open your AI app (like ChatGPT or Claude) and start a new chat. Then, copy and paste the prompt into that chat.
  5. Take the whole answer that the other AI gives you (this is your personalised memory summary).
  6. Go back to Gemini, paste the answer into the text box, and click “Add memory.”

Gemini will start a new chat thread with this information and use it right away to give more relevant and personalised answers.

Step-by-Step: How to Transfer Full Chat History to Gemini (ZIP Upload)

First, export your data from the other AI:

  • ChatGPT:
    1. Click your username (bottom left) → SettingsData controls.
    2. Next to “Export data,” click ExportConfirm Export. (You’ll receive an email with the ZIP file.)
  • Claude:
    1. Click your username (bottom left) → SettingsPrivacy.
    2. Next to “Export data,” click Export.
    3. Choose your date range and click Export. (Download link sent to your email.)

Then import into Gemini:

  1. Go to gemini
  2. Bottom left → Settings & helpImport memory to Gemini.
  3. Under “Import chats,” click Add.
  4. Select your downloaded .zip file (max 5 GB per file).
  5. Upload and wait — processing can take up to a day depending on file size and platform.

Pro tips:

  • You can upload up to 5 ZIP files per day.
  • Re-uploading the same ZIP later will add new chats and overwrite previous imports.
  • Imported chats appear in your left-hand menu under Chats with a special “imported” icon for easy identification.

What Gets Imported (and What Doesn’t)

  • Imported: Full text of your conversations, preferences, memories, and context.
  • Not imported: Images, generated files, attachments, or project files from the original AI. You can re-upload any files directly into Gemini afterward.

Benefits of Transferring Chat History to Gemini

  • Zero context loss — Continue long-term projects, ongoing research, or personal conversations seamlessly.
  • Instant personalization — Gemini learns your style and preferences immediately.
  • Time savings — No need to re-explain your background or repeat complex prompts.
  • Freedom to switch — Try Gemini without the usual switching penalty that has kept many users locked into one platform.

Availability & Important Limitations

The feature is now available, but there are some limits:

  • Only personal Google Accounts can use it (not work, school, or supervised/U18 accounts).
  • Not available in the UK, EEA, or Switzerland.
  • Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome, or Gemini on Android XR doesn’t support this.
  • You have to be at least 18 years old.
  • There can be a maximum of 5 GB in each ZIP file and 5 uploads per day.

Privacy & Data Handling

Gemini Activity keeps track of your imported chats. Google follows its standard Privacy Policy and uses this data to make its services better (for example, by training generative AI models). You can look over, change, or delete your activity at any time.

Ready to Make the Switch?

Go to gemini, click on Settings, and begin bringing in your AI memories and chat history right away. Google has gotten rid of the biggest reason not to try a new AI with all their latest features like Personal Intelligence. Now you can see how fast Gemini is, how well it can handle different types of data, and how well it works with Google tools, all while keeping all of your old data.

It’s no longer possible to be stuck in the history of one chatbot. You own your conversations, and now you can take them with you to Gemini. For more articles like this, also read OpenAI Shuts Down Sora AI
