Deeper insights develops AI solution for personalized support through Becca app for breast cancer patients

Project overview

Breast Cancer Now partners with Deeper Insights to deliver personalised information and support to patients through the BECCA app using AI technology. Resulting in improved user experience and recognition, with increased efficiency and reduced overhead.

The challenge

Breast Cancer Now is a research and support charity looking to improve the day-to-day lives of those living with or beyond primary breast cancer. The goal was to easily provide trustworthy information such as support resources, lifestyle tips, and even medical information that would align with the more specific needs of each user and help them adapt to their 'new normal'.

Breast Cancer Now had developed the content, the BECCA app for the distribution of the content, and had attracted a highly specific audience. Deeper Insights was tasked with creating an AI solution to present the right content to the ideal user.

The solution

Deep Insights was tasked with developing an AI recommendation engine that adapted to each user. In order to achieve the desired results, a variety of models and systems were evaluated and tested for this application. A relevance model was selected to determine the degree of relevance of incoming content from a predetermined set of sources, trusted websites, and data sources. The relevance model was then coupled with a content-based recommender system which was designed to adapt to each user's profile, interactions, and content consumption.

The end result

Through the diligent work of Deeper Insights the BECCA app was supported by a recommendation engine that learned from its users and provided each of them the knowledge, support, and simplicity when they needed it most.

The refined user experience was so much improved that the BECCA app was recognized in 2018 with a National Lottery Award for Best Healthcare Project. In 2019 BECCA was recognized by the British Medical Association for its user engagement. The impact of the AI solution is clear and continued for the charity as it also drastically increased the efficiency of content teams and reduced overhead by 75%.
