Deeper Insights is enhancing The Ocean Cleanup's efforts to reduce accidental marine creature entrapment with AI-assisted computer vision, image data enhancement, and real-time computation, thereby increasing turtle detection accuracy and paving the way for a fully automated surveillance system.
The challenge
The Ocean Cleanup, the non-profit project with the mission of ridding the oceans of plastic, is utilizing new AI capabilities to reduce incidental bycatch of marine animals during their operations. Their current method involves a network of cameras around the system, monitored by observers who identify any animals in the footage. However, the continuous vigilance required to monitor the camera feeds presents a daunting manual workload, resulting in a high incidence of false positives for the team.
